Apple's AI Pivot Is a Margin Story Dressed as a Product Story

Siri AI, a Photos refresh, Shortcuts with prompts. The headline feature at WWDC 2026 is buried in a developer footnote about who pays for the inference.

The shiny announcements are doing their job. Siri AI is conversational. Image Playground no longer embarrasses itself. Shortcuts takes a prompt. Point your phone at a restaurant bill and it splits the tab. Fine. None of that is the interesting line in Monday's keynote.

The interesting line is that Apple is waiving cloud API costs for developers with fewer than two million first-time App Store downloads, and that the underlying model overhaul is, per Ars Technica, two-tiered and Google-powered.

Read those two facts together. Apple spent two years working on a personalized Siri that never fully materialized, and is now subsidizing small developers to build on infrastructure it is partially renting. The on-device story remains. The frontier story is outsourced. The pricing move is what you do when you need volume on someone else's compute and cannot yet charge for it.

This is not a company taking the AI lead. It is a company buying distribution from the developers it spent a decade taxing, while a competitor's model does the heavy lifting underneath. The features are real. The strategic posture is defensive. Price the keynote accordingly.
